VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day) is the celebration of the surrender of Japan, ending combat in the Second World War on 15 August 1945.

 

In Folkestone the day will be commemorated by a service followed by the laying of wreaths at the Burma Star Memorial in the Garden of Remembrance, Sandgate Road. The Service will commence at 1100 hrs on 15 August and will be attended by civic dignitaries, military personnel, representatives of ex-service associations and their standards and youth organisations.

 

This year the Service will be conducted by the Mayors Chaplain, Kate McNeice. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Folkestone Town Council is closed from 24th December for the holidays and will reopen on Monday 5th January, with the Town Hall reopening on Tuesday 6th January with the usual opening times of 10am – 4pm.  Please note that Folkestone Museum will reopen on Saturday 3rd January.
