1RGR Freedom of the Town of Folkestone Parade
Post Event Press Release

On Sunday 12th October at 9.15am, a ceremonial event and parade were held for The First Battalion, the Royal Gurkha Rifles (1RGR), as they exercised their Freedom of the Town – an honour granted to them by the Folkestone Charter Trustees in 2004.
The ceremony outside Folkestone’s Town Hall featured a formal inspection and speeches from Major (Retd) Dennis Bradley BEM DL and the Worshipful Town Mayor of Folkestone, Cllr Lucy McGirr. Lt Col. John Jeffcoat then formally requested the Mayor’s permission to exercise this historic honour, after which the parade stepped off through the town.
Folkestone has a long and distinguished history of military association and has welcomed soldiers from many regiments over the years. Among them, the Royal Gurkha Rifles have earned a special place in the hearts of local people. Their service, dedication, and courage have not only strengthened the nation’s defence but have also enriched the life of the community. Folkestone has been privileged to witness their parades, welcome their families, and share in the traditions and values they hold dear.
The Battalion and the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas set off from the parade area outside the Town Hall on Guildhall Street at around 10.10am, marching through the town, along The Leas, and on to Sandgate Road, finishing at the Garden of Remembrance. There, troops gathered for the Gurkha Memorial Fund’s 10th Anniversary at the Gurkha Soldier Memorial Statue.
The troops were cheered and applauded by members of the public showing their support and gratitude as The Royal Gurkha Rifles made their way along the route.
