Every year, around March, the Town Mayor of Folkestone has the privilege of awarding local people a Town Mayor’s Community Award. Previous recipients of this award have varied from volunteers of a local church to people working to support those most in need.
This year, it was the turn of Councillor Lucy McGirr who was delighted to be able to show her appreciation to members of the community who go out of their way to make a difference in the town, without asking for recognition in return.
Nominations are sought from members of the public, and this year was no exception in the number of nominations received and the varied activities undertaken by proposed nominees for the Town Mayor’s Community Awards.
Councillor Lucy McGirr said “It was a pleasure to host Colin, Flo, Tim, and the Folkestone Cricket Club on Friday at the Town Hall.
It truly warmed my heart to present these awards in recognition of their unwavering support for our community—whether through championing our veterans, uplifting our town, encouraging creativity among our young people, or bringing together individuals of all genders, ages, and abilities to stay active.
I encourage everyone to come forward next year and nominate someone whose contributions to our community deserve to be recognised.”
- Colin Chandler was recognised for his voluntary support at civic events, namely being the lead steward at the Remembrance Sunday Parade. His invaluable support extends to FTC, the Lions, and the Royal British Legion, where he has provided dedicated service over the years.
- Flo Peycelon was recognised for her voluntary support and encouragement of young violinists through tutoring and setting up ‘Young Strings’, a youth string orchestra. She was also recognised for her involvement in ‘Folkestone Community Players’, a community orchestra.
- Tim Geere was recognised for many years of dedicated service supporting the Royal British Legion, the Royal Naval Association and the Sea Cadets, as well as his valued work with community groups including the Folkestone Nepalese Community Centre, the Veterans Support Group and the Veterans Breakfast Club, and representing the Royal British Legion at civic events.
- Folkestone Cricket Club was recognised for their work in becoming an inclusive community club for age, gender and ability. Folkestone Cricket Club also have a thriving Junior Program and Walking Cricket Project which encourages all ages, genders and abilities to take part in a welcoming and safe environment.
The Mayor thanked all of the recipients of the Awards on behalf of the Town Council and local community for the work undertaken, which helps to make Folkestone an attractive and safe community to live and work within.
Nominations will be open for the Town Mayor’s Community Awards 2026-27 from around October this year, so if you know someone who you think deserves some recognition, keep your eye on our website and Community Magazine for information on submitting a nomination or contact the Town Council office on 01303 257946 or georgina.wilson@folkestone-tc.gov.uk for more information.
