The Battle of Britain Day marks the anniversary of the major aerial engagement that took place on 15 September 1940 during the Battle of Britain, one of the most significant military campaigns of the Second World War. On this day, Royal Air Force pilots and aircrew successfully defended Britain against large-scale attacks by the German Luftwaffe, helping to prevent an invasion of the United Kingdom and securing a pivotal victory in the nation’s history.
In Folkestone, Battle of Britain Day was commemorated on 15 September with a wreath-laying service at the RAF War Memorial on The Leas. The service provided an opportunity for residents, veterans, civic leaders and young people to come together in remembrance of the courage, sacrifice and determination shown by the men and women of the Royal Air Force and all those who supported the war effort during this critical period.
The service was conducted by the Town Mayor’s Chaplain, Kate McNeice. The Town Mayor of Folkestone, Councillor Jackie Meade, attended alongside Brigadier (Retd.) Nick Baveystock OBE DL, fellow Town Councillors, representatives from ex-service associations, cadet and youth organisations, and their Standard Bearers. Members of the public also gathered to pay their respects and reflect on the importance of preserving the memory of those who served.
During the ceremony, wreaths were laid in honour of the RAF personnel who fought during the Battle of Britain and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the country. A period of reflection and remembrance was observed, recognising the bravery, resilience and dedication of a generation whose actions helped shape the future of the nation.
In her address, the Mayor spoke about the extraordinary sacrifice made by members of the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain and emphasised the importance of ensuring that their service and legacy are never forgotten. She highlighted the continued relevance of remembrance events in educating future generations about the cost of freedom and the values for which so many gave their lives. The Mayor thanked everyone who attended the service and expressed particular appreciation to the cadets and young people whose presence demonstrated a continuing commitment to honouring the sacrifices of those who served before them.
The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the debt owed to the wartime generation and reinforced the community’s commitment to remembering their contribution and preserving their legacy for future generations.
