Folkestone marked William Harvey Sunday on 7 June with a commemorative event celebrating the life and legacy of one of England’s most significant medical pioneers at the William Harvey Statue on The Leas.
The event, organised by Folkestone Town Council, brought together civic leaders, representatives of the Harveian Society of London and President Dr David Mummery, local organisations, and members of the community to honour William Harvey, best known for his groundbreaking discovery of the circulation of blood.
The Mayor of Folkestone, Cllr Jackie Meade attended the service alongside invited dignitaries, joining attendees in paying tribute to Harvey’s enduring contributions to science and medicine. The ceremony reflected both the historical importance of his work and the town’s strong connection to his legacy and was lead by the Mayor’s Chaplain, Rev Kate McNeice.
Chaplets were laid during the service as a mark of respect and remembrance. The Mayor, together with representatives from the Harveian Society and local groups, took part in this act of tribute, recognising Harvey’s lasting impact on medical science and his place in history.
The gathering included commemorative elements that highlighted Harvey’s achievements and the continued relevance of his work. The presence of the Harveian Society and community organisations helped create a meaningful and dignified occasion.
Speaking at the event, the Mayor, Cllr Jackie Meade said; “William Harvey’s pioneering work transformed our understanding of the human body and continues to influence medicine to this day. It is fitting that we come together each year to honour his remarkable legacy and celebrate Folkestone’s connection to such an important figure in history.”
William Harvey Sunday remains an important date in Folkestone’s civic calendar, providing an opportunity for the community to reflect on the town’s heritage while celebrating the achievements of one of its most notable historical figures.
Folkestone Town Council was proud to organise the event, continuing its commitment to preserving and promoting the town’s rich history and traditions.
