Folkestone paid tribute on 6th June to the courage and sacrifice of Allied forces who took part in the D-Day landings, with a dignified commemorative service held at the Garden of Remembrance.
The ceremony brought together civic leaders, veterans, members of the Armed Forces, local organisations, and residents to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Normandy landings. The Town Mayor of Folkestone, Cllr Jackie Meade was joined by fellow dignitaries and invited guests to honour those who served and gave their lives during one of the most pivotal moments of the Second World War.
Wreaths were laid during the service as a mark of remembrance and respect. The Mayor, alongside representatives from the Armed Forces, veterans’ associations, and community groups, took part in the act of commemoration, observing a period of reflection to honour the bravery and sacrifice of all those involved.
The service, which was cut slightly short due to the weather, was held in the peaceful surroundings of the Garden of Remembrance, included readings that highlighted the significance of D-Day and the enduring importance of remembering the courage of those who fought for freedom.
Speaking at the service, the Mayor, Cllr Jackie Meade said; “Today we come together as a community to remember the extraordinary bravery of those who took part in the D-Day landings. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy today, and it is our duty to ensure their legacy is never forgotten.”
Folkestone, with its historic links to cross-Channel operations during the war, remains a fitting location for such remembrance. The annual service continues to play a vital role in bringing the community together to reflect on the past and honour those who served.
The event concluded with a shared moment of remembrance, reinforcing the town’s ongoing commitment to recognising the service and sacrifice of the wartime generation.
